Why get vaccinated against meningococcal disease and the ACWY strains?
Meningococcal disease can be deadly and people can die or lose limbs within 24 hours. There have been recent outbreaks of the disease in Australia and Western Australia, especially with the W and Y strains. The W strain is thought to be highly aggressive and is considered deadlier than the other strains. Teenagers aged from 14 – 19 years of age are considered the biggest carriers of this bacteria because of their social engagement at festivals, parties, late nights as well as deep kissing, sharing of food and drink. The State Government is offering a free immunisation program to protect this age group from spreading the disease and building up herd immunity. This vaccine will only protect against these 4 strains and NOT meningococcal B. That is a separate range of injections. Meningococcal disease can affect any ONE, any WHERE and at any TIME
What Should I bring to the Vaccination day?
We require you to bring your Medicare Card and Photo I.D.
Who shouldn’t get the ACWY shot?
If you are currently unwell like shortness of breath, wheezing, swelling, rashes or hives to the skin, if you have serious reactions to vaccines, if you are pregnant (speak to your GP first to get permission). Taking medicines that might reduce your immune response.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
